Information technology (IT) is a very broad category of jobs involving the use of technology. For example, networking, software development, game development, and technical training are all subsets of information technology.
It's like the main heading of business, with marketing, finance, and management being individual sub-headings.
Certain areas of IT have been heavily downsized and outsourced over the past several years, but there are other areas that are making a comeback and seeing growth. One example is gaming.

Information Technology (IT) is a broad field that encompasses all types of technology - computers, software, communications, internet, etc. Jobs in IT are mostly extremely technical, with the exceptions of management, sales and support such as accounting, HR, etc. You should enter the IT field if you LOVE technology. computer networking and adiminstration. You usually need a Microsoft certification to get a job, the a-plus certification was $9,000 last time I checked. The pay for those jobs usually ranges 13-50 hr, but be prepared to be overworked.

It is a very diverse field. Everything from coding programs, pc support, service desks, system and network engineering, project management, consultating and on and on. It can pay pretty well but the the stress and the hours can get to you.
