When working with heritage albums or vintage photos I tend to use the dark jewel colors-- if you know the person in the photo and know what their favorite colors are then you could always use those colors, that helps in keeping with the personality of that person. There are alot of great papers now that you can use for heritage photos, but play with using some color--alot of times just layering colors both patterned and solids works great depending on the look you're wanting. there's alot of scrapbooking galleries on-line you could look through to get ideas,. Don't be afraid to use color, black and white papers with black and white photos tends to cause the photos to disappear and blend into the background . . . a fine printed patterned paper works great--mat your photos a couple times to really make them stand out. Hot off the Press has some great heritage papers and their paper books come with ideas on mixing papers & colors too.

Last year I had the same question when my Aunt's gave me four boxes of the old family photos. They were all in black and white and sepia tones. I found that bright and bold patterns look terrible, so I stuck with browns, maroons, very rich reds, greens, blue and gold and stayed with small patterns. If you need a place to look for some idea books and supplies check out www.addictedtoscrapbooking.com they usually have vintage paper packs that are a great help. I would also find a Michaels it's a great store for scrapbooking supplies.

If using old sepia or b&s photos for scrapbooking try to use vintage color schemes as well. Modern colors will not fit in with that faded old photo of Aunt Mina in her graduation gown and you will never be quite satisfited with your results. A good way to find simple but effective vintage color schemes is at a paint store. No kidding. Sherwin-Williams paint stores have color scheme folders with paint chips in them for Victorian era houses, Craftsman houses, and so on. They will also help you choose other paint chips so you can take them to a scrapbooking store and match up the papers you need. This way, with only a little research, you can get ideas for the colors you need for any era of photo you are using. Your scrapbook will be beautiful and you will have properly honored those wonderful vintage photos! -- Bjo Trimble

Black and white are definite colors, actually Black is a saturation of color and white is the absence of color. I think it is most appealing to the eye if you stick with definite color schemes.
A color like Red Yellow or Blue. There are a lot of neon colors that would look great too, Electric lime green, Flaming pink flamingo. Get several color swatches to see what you like before you make any thing permanent.
