Try to log into Safe Mode (Press F8 when the computer is booting up and you'll get a prompt for Safe Mode). And do a System Restore (if you have Windows XP of course). Otherwise, get your self the Recovery Disc from Dell. They usually send those discs out to customers for free. They'll ask for the either the Service Tag or Express Service Tag, both of which are located on the bottom of your Dell laptop.

Hello,
The DELL machine is running an operating system, mostly its windows XP or windows 2000. The error message is because the operating system requires that your hard disk uses something called a boot record. Then the drive is mounted and so windows can see the drive and its knows what kind of hardware it has & how to then talk to it (read & write data to and from the drive).
**Without doing alot of searching my self I would say that windows has a missing device driver somewhere, or the boot record is damaged or that windows cannot locate your hard drive from the boot sequence (boot.ini file, which needs to know where to find the boot drive).
**You need the orginial windows disk which will allow you to either fix or repair a damaged windows installation or to re-install windows if its beyond immediate repairing. Either way you definately need to Windows CD disk to do any of the above.
**The blue screen (also called the blue screen of death) indictates a windows OS "Stop Error", a stop error is a windows critical or fatal error, windows has crashed badly and need a repair or re-installation.
**You can do a search on the Microsoft website for windows stop errors and it could tell you what causes the system to crash.

Get a friend to download the xp recovery download from the Microsoft website, it makes a set of floppy disks to boot from and recover hard disk and windows bootup problems. They have helped me many times usually after a power cut.
