i was just watching this show and they were discussing thie topic of music censorship. im already excluding the narrow minded ignorance that this is just rap. i listen to various kinds of music so i can already tell you its not just rap! but on the show they were just acknowledging the fact that rap is an artistic expression of the "black mans" experience in the ghettos of america. (all minorities not just black) do we censor the music (hard rock, gangster rap, etc) that we fear will influence younger generations (im 16)even though it violates the constitutions right of freedom of speech? is the media and environment responsible for influence on children or is it the parents job to monitor what they listen to/watch? there is so much more that falls into this -the fact that the people allow corportations to sign these violent artists on record deals (in the end the people do have a say to what they respond to)-or do they have a right to profit regardless? what do u think?!

Well, once we start censoring one thing it won't stop till the few people in the government have complete control of our lives; including everything from the clothes we wear, the music we listen to, the books we read, the religion we believe, etc, etc, etc until we have nothing of ourselves left. No, I don't think we should censor anything. I believe that, as parents, we have the responsibility to teach our children right from wrong and reinforcing that by using examples throughout their childhood. This is the best way to teach our children. Not by completely barring them from experiencing things. Then the wonder is left open and they can and will go overboard trying to learn these things that have been made taboo.

This is a very good question!!Go generation X! (you're 16, im 18)

I have to say I am torn about this issue, but I am leaning more towards the side of most of everyone else here, that censoring music is not right.1) Because it would be unconsitutional on so many levels, and one must ask, where would we be if we censored this type of music, then what other form of society would the government be in complete control over? This is the exact opposite of what the country was supposedly founded on, and ever since we have been quoting "freedom of speech" then we must live up to it. 2) The industry has definitely done its part by putting up parental advisories and implementing the rule that no one under 18 can purchase music that has parental advisory stickers on it, it is up to the parents to enforce these rules. It shouldn't be anyones fault that your child got a hold on some unsavory music when the laws are there. Just like we have underage drinking laws that work and are only in effect, when the parents strong arm it.

Although, the only thing I am worried about with this type of music is the unfortunate rise in crime, violence, and apparent suicides amongst young people listening to such violent music. Case in point, the Columbine High School shootings which were triggered in effect by not only taunting by other kids but also the heavy metal, rage, and psycosis music they were apparently listening to. It is no secret this type of music has a negative affect on the already so fragile adolescent brain, because of the constant suicidal lyrics and repetition of tempo. Now, I am not saying this is the industries fault intirely but I am saying nowadays, after the recent new American threat of terrorism, whether it be kids at school or foreigners terrorism is a constant staple in some of this music. The government then has a responsiblity to the citizens to keep them safe and point out terroristic threats, thoughts, and potential actions. This unfortunately nowadays is found in some of the music genres you've mentioned in your question.Because when will people understand that in a post September 11th world, that "freedom of speech" has its limits?

Censorship of any kind is pretty useless. All it really does is make the curious minds want to know more about it which is the exact opposite effect.

Music is like any other industry - if you object to it simply don't listen to it or listen to something else. The whole idea of censorship is an insult to the bigger concepts of free will and freedom of choice. It is just some authority figure saying "you are too stupid to know what offendes you so I am going to protect you from it. I know better than you so I'll make the choice for you." Wars have been fought over idiotic ideas like that. If you want to censor something, do it in your own little sphere and let those who like and/or agree with the hip-hoppers listen in.

No, I do not agree with censorship of music or any other art form. They are all forms of expression and children under 18 are supposedly not able to purchase music with explicit lyrics, so I think the industry has done its part to help deter the influence music may have on younger, more impressionable teens.

If you censor music, you will have to do the same with all art forms that depict violence. That's a bad thing, if you ask me as we all know life is not a bowl of cherries and some stories need to be told. Ratings are advisories are put in place to protect the young, but it is up to the parents to enforce them.

i feel that as a community we are all responsible for the development of our children. so when placing certain music on family oriented channels with t.v. and radio, we should censor, however, when it comes to adult channels late night, and cds, we should not have censorship because this is where the parents need to step in. Give the parents the right to whether they want their children to hear foul music by using ratings, or giving a designated time for certain programs. Like on cartoon network and adult swim

I don't believe in censoring any music (or books, for that matter). What I do believe in, however, is making the lazy parents of today buck up and start raising thier children instead of using computers, video games and TVs as babysitters. If the parents raise the kids well enough, the kids won't listen to that kind of music because they won't want to.

i do no longer trust censorship, yet i've got faith that in many circumstances sturdy language is used greater as a gimmick to get interest than it somewhat is an important area of lyrical content textile. i would not thoughts lots in the event that they saved the alternative open to purchase the two the sparkling or uncensored variations in a similar shop, yet to get all preachy approximately it seems variety of incorrect. And whilst you're procuring a Fifty Cent album on your 10 12 months previous teenagers you desire greater help than a sparkling version of his albums.

HELL NO!!! If they're trying to force artists not to curse in their rhymes, then I totally disagree with it. I'm 20 and I like rap music UNCENSORED! This way it connects you directly to whatever the artist is feeling while singing it.

Actually, I don't even think that kids shouldn't hear curses, or see sex-related videos. I don't think that's very important for the growth of that person - after all, we all curse at times, even if our parents told us not to (while they keep doing it themselves).

So I think it's BS, and that it should be illegal to tell anyone what they are allowed to say or not.

To a point I agree. I think there certainly has to be controls on what children and minors have access to, but I also think some adults are certainly incapable of assessing what is and what is not "good." From the standpoint of legality, I think open and free expression is good, but you also have to determine who might be impressionable enough to be affected by it.

I think any kind of censorship on any kind of music is crap. Rock and roll has had violent lyrics and so many references to drug use and bashing of so many things. I think its stupid to censor any music.
