just wondering if the city of London had a nickname?

Another vote for The Smoke, because of the fog/smog years ago. Never heard of those other "nicknames".
When I was a kid in South London there were still bad smogs, sometimes so bad you could not see across the street. I loved them!
One smog in the early 50's (when nearly everyone still had coal fires) killed several thousand people (generally old people with bronchial problems).

Its still called "The Smoke", because it used to be covered in a haze of smoke from the coal-fires, leading to thick smog when it was foggy. The smog was what made it so easy for Jack the Ripper to go undetected in the 19th century.

It will always be "the smoke" due to the fog of years gone by and how it was portrayed in the movies. It is no where as near as bad as that now... with the exception of the past week or two of course. :D
