wash it first with warm soap dish liquid, rinse well dry it with a towel, then using a paper tower or basting brush add a little of oil covering all the out side and inside of skillet;turn oven on 350* add foil to bottom rack ;place skillet in oven and bake it for a hour ; let it cool then rip off some wax paper cut the wax paper into a circular to fit inside of skillet for storage ; this protects it from other skillets and pots and pans; be sure to treat iron skillet every so often so it will not rust .My grandmother taught me this tip since i now have 3 to 4 ironcast skillets of my own ;also if you do not have no wax paper you can use a paper towel to line the inside of the skillet too or plastic bag..

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Lower both oven racks to bottom positions-line lower rack with foil to catch drippings.
Wash skillet inside and out with mild detergent using a stiff brush.
Rinse and towel dry.
Spread a thin coat of melted solid shortening all over skillet including handle (both inside and outside).
Place skillet on top rack.
Bake for 1 hour. Turn oven off and leave skillet in oven until cool.
Do not store lids on pots to all air circulation.
Do not wash skillet with soap or you will need to re-season.
Hope this helps

Every ten years or so I take my Mom's old 12" cast iron frying pan camping with me. I get my fire going, then just toss it in. All the crap burns off it, and out of it. Be careful when you take it out of the fire; it might be really hot!

Then, before you use it again, it needs to be seasoned. Get the pan warm and then, using a paper towel, rub corn or olive oil into the pan. You might do this twice. Do the outside and bottom, too. If you don't season the pan, it'll rust on you. You don't want that to happen.

Good Luck!

salt and oil ,scrub until all the gunk comes off the inside then wash the outside with a little soap and water and put on the cook top and heat up to set the oil to the pan. If you do this enough they become almost like a nonstick.
