It is never actually revealed as far as I can tell, but does anyone know?

I think it is some kind of good luck charm. I mean, it doesn't do anything right? The guy just wants it so bad, so it must be some kind of good luck.

The Rabbit's Foot in the movie was a McGuffin. A McGuffin is a screenwriter term, coined by Alfred Hitchcock, which is simply something that gets the story started. Usually the main character will spend the movie attempting to get it. A McGuffin can be anything, though usually it's a small item like a briefcase or documents. Another example is the contents of the case in Pulp Fiction.

Since it's only a plot device to get the characters into the story it's almost always left rather ambiguous for the audiance as to what it actually is.

In other words, the Rabbit's Foot is whatever you want to imagine it to be.

Best possible answer..... Could be wrong, but I actually think this might be an idea that evolved from Dan Brown's novel Angels & Demons. If you haven't read it (u should,) it involves an element known as "anti-matter," being placed inside Vatican City, to destroy the city. The tiny amount of antimatter was kept in a small device Extreemly(!) similar to that which is seen in M:i:3. To give you an idea of how powerful anti-matter is: It releases energy with 100% efficiency... Nuclear fission releases energy at 1.5% efficiency.... Do the math, 66.7 times more powerful ....and this stuff really exists..... Anyways, early in the movie the "rabbits foot" is questioned to be something named the "anti-god".... another reference to anti-matter

So what have we learned when comparing M.i.3. w/ Dan Brown's Angels & Demons:
1. Both have scenes involving Vatican City at some point.
2. Both involve an EXTREEMLY powerful weapon that exists in the form of a small canister
3. In Angels & Demons the weapon is anti-matter, In MI3 it is at one point reffered to as "anti-god"... time for some word play... God created everything... everthing is matter... giving you "anti-matter"... coincidence? I think not

Angels & Demon's I believe was published in 2000. Again, I could be wrong, but I seriously doubt this storyline was written before then. There's no way these things are a coincidence.

Anti-matter...look it up
Angels & Demons... read it, you'll thank me later

There is your answer...

It is hinted that it is an incredibly powerful encryption decoder. Essentially it is a magic key that can unlock just about anything that he held in electronic data. In the end though there is no real proof. It is just like asking what is inside the briefcase in Pulp Fiction. It is assumed to be a Soul because the combination is 666, and everyone is so captivated by it, but it is up to the viewer to decide for them self.

the "rabbit's foot" is what is known in film ters as a maguffin. Its identity is there to distract you from other things and its identity is not important. Hitchcock used this technique a lot in his films, but the most famous contemporary example is the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

I don't think you are ever meant to know what the rabbits foot is. The point is Tom Cruises' character would do anything to get anything to get his wife back.

I don't think it was explained, but essentually it's what Alfred Hitchcock called a "MacGuffin". It's only function is to advance the plot and give the characters a reason to do the things they do. Everyone's after the MacGuffin; i.e. where are the plans to the Death Star, etc.
