The color of a flame has to do with oxygen mixture and unburnt carbon/soot particles.

The blue flame you see from a gas grill or Bunsen burner means that the process of combustion is a complete one. Meaning that all carbon (organic matter) and gas is being burnt efficiently and completely.

The yellow-orange flame you see from a piece of burning wood is a result of an incomplete/inefficient combustion process. Not all of the matter or gas is burning. There is so much organic material in wood, that it is nearly impossible to get a blue flame in normal conditions.

the colours of flames all depend on the compounds and elements present in the source that is producing that flame or in other words, the source that is being burnt.
a gas flame will most likely contain natural gas that is methane (CH4) and that gives a blue colour. wood is a complicated substance, containing many bio-chemical compounds, living cells, some amount of protein too and this gives a yellow flame on being burnt.
if u burn potassium compounds, u will get a lilac flame (which is very pretty!)
similarly, calcium, strontium and lithium gives red flames and barium compounds give a green flame. all copper compounds will give a bluish-green flame. etc etc etc etc.

Yellow means incomplete combustion, if the flame is blue all the gas is being burned. If you cook on this pit and the flame is yellow, it will smut your cook wear.A blue flame also gives more heat so your getting more B.T U output. Natural gas will give you 1150 B.T.U per cubic foot, were as Propane or Butane give 1430 B.T.U per cubic foot Go ahead make my day, I dare you to call your gas company. and ask.

the blue flame indicates there is complete combustion; products are only carbon dioxide and water

when a flame is yellow it is because there is incomplete combustion and you are seeing the result of impurities being burned.
