There isn't alot of information this but it is believed that the sympathetic nerve tone is diminished with age - like all our reflexes even these reflexes decrease with age. The symathetic nervous system is responsible for dilating the eyes.

My information is confirmed by a text called "Clinical Geriatric Neurology." date 1993

I think older people are generally larger so their "pupils" or "students" are going to be younger people. Young people are usually smaller.

I mean how many 5 year olds do you know that are as big as a 50 year old?

That's why older people have smaller pupils!

Define older! Do you mean adults vs. children, children vs. infants, 70-80yr olds compared to 20-30 year olds?

Anyway...pupil size is a function of the amount of light hitting the eye. More light, smaller pupil; less light, larger pupil. See http://www.stlukeseye.com/anatomy/Pupil.asp
