Ok,just so you know....my ipod is a nano I don't know if this will help but here goes.

1)Is itunes the only music program available to download music?
2)If it is,instead of just paying a dollar per song is there some sort of membership that allows you to make monthly payments?

no u can use real player to transer songs to your ipod and to get music on ur computer use limewire www.limewire.com here is what you do to get realplayer to work
open realplayer up go to burn/transfer on the tab and on the address bar if it goes to cd burner you want to make it go to burn/transfer home then add new device... which is on the side panel click it it will load a page at the top it should say Portable Devices go down to the list of mp3 players click on the one that says Apple iPod (all models) right beside that it will have a differant page thing scroll all the way to the bottom where it says 1.firmwere 2install device click install device a thing will come up softwere update requierd at the bottom where it says install click that note that u have to have realplayer portable device support checked install that the install should take approximently 1 min when it finishers let real player restart then once up go back to burn/transfer then attach the ipod now ipod should come up on the side if not then it will be in your window next to it if you decide thats to much and download itunes u can use it to tranfer the songs on to it and download the songs using limewire and it is free

no, there are also other free downloaded programs.
i use LimeWire. its a pretty good program, and its free!

but, if you do decide to use iTunes, i think if you buy the whole album, its cheaper than buying each song by itself for a dollar.
