Total knowledge exists and is finite, as long as we define it as everything humanity knows. It is not possible for a human being to acquire total knowledge. However, there is a certain amount, that a society considers enough to claim somebody is knowledgeable. Often, if one knows more than the people around him/her - s/he is considered knowledgeable. And the opportunity does exist for anyone to expand their knowledge. This opportunity only becomes reality, if there is a desire to expand knowledge.
So, curiosity is a prerequisite for knowledge.
Ignorance is the opposite if knowledge. An ignorant individual will know less than most people in his/her society or group, i.e. they will be below the commonly acceptable standard.
This, coupled with lack of curiosity, constitutes ignorance.

You may know about the possibility of total knowledge but I don't.
So it is clear that one of the components of ignorance is not being aware of the ignorance.
Another component is the inability or the lack of motivation, for whatever reason, to eliminate the ignorance. At least that is often a component.
Ignorance seems to have a self-replicating or self perpetuating aspect to it. It seems to spread into virtually every aspect of knowledge, fouling knowledge with unverifiable "truths".
Belief appears to be a subtle form of ignorance that pretends to be knowledge but is clearly not.

The thing is, we can never understand about the possibility of total knowledge. There are things we know- which we can never understand, and things we don't know- which we will never get the chance to understand, as these things go beyond our human ability to even question.
Hope that makes sense
edit
what i mean is that, calling someone ignorant is just as erroneous as calling someone knowledgeable.

if you are asking what constitutes or makes up ignorance for me, they are:
-lack of understanding
-unwillingness to learn and understand from others
-unwillingness to learn and understand about all cultures, religions, races
-assuming that the knowledge that they obtain or have justifies the belief that they are always right and everyone else is wrong
-being narrow-minded and shallow
-unwillingness of taking in new knowledge that will help their understanding of what ignorance is
- ignorance can almost be seen as a form of prejudice
-unlike arrogance, where one considers themselves superior to everyone else, ignorance refers to the disregarding of certain people, because to them they single out one thing which is different to other people that they don't consider is socially or morally acceptable- eg, race/ethnicity, homosexuality
- ignorance breeds hatred and war

some of the answers that you recieved is a perfect example of it. instead of answering I dont know, they instead give up of searching/thinking about the question. refusing to accept many possiblities of a solution can be one. instead of finding the truth or answer, we try to answer with what me already know instead of really looking into it. hope this helps cause im about to get confused. lol
