A principle is kind of like a rule or guideline. [See source.]
In physics, as in most disciplines, we have a hierarchy of the degree of understanding. The axiom, for example, is a fundamental degree of understanding that most people accept as the truth...period, no testing required. One might say "The sun rises every day" is an axiom, for example. No rational person could deny that fact.
At the other extreme in physics, there are the philosophies or concepts (lay people might call them wild *** guesses--WAGs). String theory falls into this category of understanding because, thus far, no one has come up with a suitable test to test its validity.
In between axioms and WAGs, there are a half dozen or more levels of understanding, most of which I've long forgotten. Included in this range are: lemmas, theories, hypotheses, laws, principles, and so on. On a practical note, I find all theses arcane definitions quite useless as a physicist.
