hello ........guy,.........
Linux is a free os which is available on net.
there are many linux distributions available worldwide.
here are some of the websites hosting them,
"www.ubuntu.com"
It's a free distro,and is quite useful for a novice.
"www.fedora.redhat.com/Download"
according to me the above one is the best Lnux distro I've ever experienced
others are;
www.mandriva.com/download
www.gentoo.org/main/en/mirrors.xml
www.download.opensuse.org
But for LINUX you have to keep your Drivers Ready or else it might be great problem to bundle them for linux.
.......................BEST OF LUCK.................................

It depends what you do with your computer, and what changes your willing to deal with. If you already use free software extensively like Firefox, Openoffice, etc. Go for it. If you have a Windows app you can't live without, you will need to see if it is supported by Cross Over $39.95 http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/, or try there 60 day trial. Yes Wine is free, but it's harder to make it work right. If your a gamer, you have to see if your favorite games have a linux version, or if it will work good with Cedega, http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/
My recommendation bring new life to an older computer, I know most have one hanging around (for most versions of Linux make sure it has at least 128 MB to run OK, 256 MB to run good), and use it as your secure internet browsing computer and play with linux, see how you like it. Another thing if you get a Gnome based Linux, you don't have to deal with that annoying toolbar on the top, it's easy to customize. After using Windows for 10 years, I had to right click to delete the bottom menu, drag the top menu to the bottom and right click add the application "window list" back.
