at the last E3 - it was said that gameboy was going to receive a lot less attention soon - not to be utterly replaced by the DS (which they stress is NOT a gameboy) but just because it's time to retire it. games will probably stop being made for it by the end of 2007 or 08. that still leaves hundreds and hundreds of awesome titles to play, of course

just because nintendo stopped making the gameboy player doesn't mean that it's that hard to find anymore. you can look in department stores that many people overlook - quite a few actually have them

(though you'll probably have to price-match with gamestop to get the real price - most retail stores aren't good at keeping up properly with video game prices)

The shelf life of handhelds is different than consoles. Many more people buy handhelds as a casual device, so they're not going to jump at the chance when a new handheld is released, and Nintendo realizes this. So, instead of forcing people to buy a DS, they kept supporting the GBA crowd for a while. And if I recall, there were still regular Gameboy Color games for a while after the GBA was released. Many console owners are of the "hardcore" variety who will be willing to buy a new console as soon as their old one isn't supported anymore, and Nintendo takes full advantage of that....it would be pretty silly if they didn't. They've done that with major consoles ever since the SNES.

Nintendo currently want to focus on the Wii. Game Boy player for the GameCube is specifically only for the GameCube and can't be used on the Wii.

Perharps in the future, there will be a Game Boy player for the Wii, whether in software (like the Wii's Virtual Console) and/or hardware (like the Game Boy player for the GameCube). The problem lies on, do you have to buy a new copy of the game or can you use your old cartridge instead?
