The pumps are shut down. US law prohibits dispensing when an attendant is not on duty in case of incident (fuel spill, etc.)

It may be illegal like the last guy said but I have pumped gas at closed stations multiple times using a debit card, when no one is on duty. Maybe the stations are breaking the law by leaving the pumps on but a lot of them do it.

Some close the pumps and some don't. If the station is closed, you obviously can't pay cash but almost all gas stations leave the pumps for people using credit/debit.

Yes it is possible...
In most states it is illegal, but who's looking?
The dispensers are left on due to the fact that they have a computer in each of them... (loose programing!)
The power isn't cut off to the pump due to the line leak monitoring system... It keeps a constant check of the psi on the lines underground. Most stations are able to program the card readers to only acknowledge a swiped card during business hours. Some do, some don't
The reason I said it was illegal is due to fire codes in most states that require a station that doesn't have an attendant on duty to have a fire suppression system in place. These systems are very expensive... Next time your at a Costco gas station, look up at the canopy... you'll see cameras (infrared) and sprinkler heads....

Legally: relies upon. some gasoline stations are open 24 hours an afternoon once you utilize a mastercard. Illegally: confident.. a splash. there is often nonetheless some gasoline in the hose. you could usually open the nozzle whilst the pump is off and get a splash right into a can at floor point. attempting to apply a pump to suck it out can no longer artwork as maximum pumps use "displacement" pumps which pass a precise volume of gasoline for each revolution... so, gasoline in simple terms isn't sucked around a stopped vane. shop your nickels and dimes.

Many of the gas stations in my area allow you to pump gas as long as you can pay at the pump with a debit or credit card. I actually just did this myself lastnight.

If you use a credit or debit card you can usually pump gas whether they are closed or not. Think about it, they are getting the money, which of course is all they care about.
