and they went and told someone else whom they knew would tell the family member what you told them, which would automaticly cause conflict in your family, because it was related to some type of drug abuse among other things that the family member is doing.Would you stop dealing with the friend because they have caused big problems in your family?

May I add that the friend is also my sister-in-law and I told her these things because I was angry with my family member so I was just venting, I did not think should would tell anyone else this info to ruin the persons reputation. Also I do know that I should have kept my mouth shut,it is too late for that(the milk is already spilled). My question was would you still be friends with this person? Also we were friends way before we became in-laws but my family hates her because the way she talks about people, but I really did not think she would repeat anything I said.

Don't say anything about your internal family matter to the outsider.

This depends on how you still feel. If you feel very betrayed and don't think you will get passed this then I would say its time to let them know they crossed the permanent line.
But in many cases, people act before they think and sometimes only realize it when its too late.
If this friend is truly sorry and shows remorse for their actions then its likely in time you will forgive and forget.
But if they seem to not care and feel they didn't do anything wrong then that's another story.
Either way If I was you, I would be a little more careful in the future with information that you wish to keep under raps with those you hold as friends.

You need to look at your own actions. You are the one who started this chain in motion. If you took your friend into your confidence, and they betrayed that on purpose with full knowledge of the repercussions, then I would be very upset with them. But the fact remains that if you hadn't told them, none of this would have happened. Appologize to the family member and, more importantly, try to get them some help for their drug addtiction.

It wasnt the friend who caused the problem...it was YOU. You need to really know who your REAL friends are. I am not sayin you shouldnt have told because I divulge family secrects to my best friend ALL the time, and so does she..but we trust each other with our lives and NOTHING or NO ONE in this world could get us to betray each other. Did you feel this way about the friend you told secrects too? In any event...YOU made the mistake and YOU did the mess up. KNOW YOUR REAL FRIENDS!!

Fisrt I would speak to the family member so they could tell family themself before they hear it from someone else. Second I would tell my 'friend' how disappointed I was they had betrayed my trust and because I could not trust them in future, we are no longer friends. You could tell family member you had discussed their behaviour because you are concerned for their health.

NO.
DRUGS ARE THE PROBLEM and your ignorance of the problem is the secondary problem.
This was not just simple family gossip like "oh my god, do you believe Aunt Ethel? Her new hairdo sucks."
THIS IS DRUGS. AND DRUGS ARE SERIOUS.
If it is you that is doing the drugs then you are causing the family problems and your friend is trying to help.
Get help. or get the person help.

They didn't cause big problems for your family, you caused big problems by not being able to keep your mouth shut. When you know a secret, keep your lips zipped.

I'd stop dealing with myself because I was an idiot to open my mouth in the first place about something personal about another person.
