People have always marked, in one way or another, the end of a cycle of life and the beginning of another. In ancient cultures, such as the Celts, this was actually done in the fall, after the last harvest. It marked the end of one 'year' of life. In other places, it was done in the spring, some cultures mark years by the moon, such as the East Asian cultures, or the Jews. Our Calendar was first based on the Roman Julian calendar which had the beginning of the year celebrated on April 1st. During the reign of Pope Gregory I, the calendar was re-calculated, and the New Year placed eight days after the celebration of Christ's Mass (Christmas). I am not sure of the reason, but this whole time was a great time of celebration anyway because of that holiday. It took some time for people to adapt to January 1 as being the New Year, hence the whole idea of "April Fools Day" began when people would still call April 1st the new year, and were called 'fools', and pranks pulled on them because thought them stupid.

New Year. Is the most wonderful, fun-filled occassion of the whole year. Its too bad, it only happen once.

Anyway, New Year is the time people contemplate about their lives, how they want to live it, how they want to change it for the better, everything that goes on the line of "change for the better."

It's fun cause you tell about your resolutions and what you want to accomplish in the coming year.

Plus, if you're in the Philippines, you get to see tons of fireworks. Unlike other countries, it's not illegal to use firecrackers. All households there, when the clock strikes midnight - you would hear deafening noise all around. That's when all the firecrackers are lit and it's color surrounds every street and overhead.

It's a lovely scene. I get to miss it terribly because I'm away.

Early man noticed the daily cycle of the sun. Then the cycle of the phases of the moon and the seasons of the year. Astronomers put these cycles within cycles together and came up with the year cycle. These day, month and year cycles were used to measure time. Most cultures who recognized the yearly cycle came up with a day that marked the beginning of a new year.

well, it's the moment that the new year begins. why we stay up until midnight i really don't know, i guess we just want to be the first to see the new year come in and it gives us an excuse to wake all the neighbors by shooting off fireworks and such.
