I'm trying to find The Lewis and Clark Epedition scenes in Newspaper cartoons and I sort of found one, but it only made fun of the whole expedition. Is that what it's supoosed to do?

Newspaper cartoonists are hired because of their ability to poke fun at current events and to make pointed comments designed to provoke discussion with readers. There is a big difference, though, when it comes to syndicated cartoonists who follow their own agenda.

Usually a cartoon is meant to be funny. On the other hand, an illustration is used for illustrating what happened and is often of a more serious nature. If you're looking for something serious, you might have better luck looking in magazines that have editorial illustrations (e.g. drawings that accompany an article), rather than cartoons from a newspaper.
