Hi there! I am currently on Ortho-Tri Cyclen Lo and let's say I experience a bout of diarrhea today that could possibly continue. I am on the third day of my last week of active pills, and I know I have to use a back-up method for a week. If the week extends into my placebo week, do I have to use condoms during the placebo week or can I use no back-up once the placebo pills start?

Thanks so much!

You need to use alternate birth control during the placebo week. They don't contain any hormones they are just there so you don't get out of the habit of taking you pills.

Diarrhea shouldn't effect how birth control works. The pill should have already been broken up through your stomach and absorbed through your blood stream before it got to your intestines....which is where diarrhea trouble begins naturally. When you are vomiting within a few hours after taking the pill, you definitely need to worry about a back-up method because you are throwing up the pill before it has had time to absorb into your system. But, just in case, to be on the safe side, use a condom anyway.

Is there any particular reason that you are forseeing bouts of diarrhea continuing in your future and this is all asked hypothetically? That sounds like something a bulemic would ask. If I am wrong, I apologize.

Are you taking yaz ? If so you only have to use a backup method during your first week on the pill once you have been taking the pill for awhile you should not have to use a backup method but i would just in case. The white pill is an inactive pill that should be taken when your period comes on but sometimes it may come a little late.

Hi, the real question is how much time in between you take your pill and your diarhea. If you take your pill in the morning and you don't go to the bathroom until the evening, then you should be fine. If there is only a couple of hours in between, then you should use protection until you start your next pack. Honestly, if you have any doubts at all - you should use condoms.

There is a reason they put those in there! All the pills are meant to be taken.
