In my own case I like to take this approach to life... I think the worse that can happen for this or that situation, often verbalize it and usually - most of the time - find myself looking at a result that is a much better outcome than what I had thought of.
The result, I usually end up with a positive outcome.

i don' think people are 'addicted' to it - they have just done it so much that that's all they really know how to do. and yes, it IS possible to stop. it just takes a tremendous amount of will power, more than most people are willing to put forth.
and no, it doesn't make them happy, but it's what they are comfortable with, so people don't want to change.

Maybe they have had miserable lives so their negative thinking is a coping mechanism that does, in fact, make them happy.

They are called pessimists. The world is full of them. The only problem I have with them is when they try to drag me down with 'em. Not much anyone can do except say, "Stop whining! There are worse things!!"
