People have little tolerance for difference, and apparently it's out of fashion, which is a load of bull really, because not everyone HAS to fit into the skimpy fashion land that all the dumb blonds seem to enjoy. Be who you want to be, because really, it isn't wrong to be Goth or punk styled. If it seems right to you, that's great. Don't listen to the people who scorn it, they're all clones anyways.

I fought this for years... in my own way... and here is what I found.
1. People judge you initially (and for a long time after that sometimes) on how you look. Generally-speaking, people want to be around attractive people. Being attractive starts off with being happy, healthy and situation-appropriate.
2. When you go goth or punk, you're basically broadcasting messages about yourself. These messages are as powerful as the ones that I outlined in point #1. When I see a goth person, I see someone who deliberately wants to look unhealthy (I mean, DEAD), unhappy, and never dresses according to their situation. Punkers likewise send out those same anti-messages -- safety pins through lips never signal strong health, or happiness, or situation appropriate.
3. Heck, think about it -- if attire didn't matter, why would punkers or goths bother spending the time, money and effort to dress like this? Of course it matters!
Therefore, people aren't worried about the attire per se, but they definitely don't like the anti-social messages that you're sending. You're saying that you don't fit in... and they oblige. That look says that you're not healthy or happy or situation-appropriate, and people simply respond by keeping you away from them.
Last thing -- they probably were punk or goth or something else (hippie, yuppie, etc) for a few weeks once themselves. You remind them of their own silly period of their lives.

Why is it not OK?? What type of question is that? Anything is OK in the eyes of the beholder. Why is it not ok to Kill?? Simply because the majority agrees that killing is wrong. So why is it not OK to be Gothic?? If asking the question you must not be ok with it yourself, being that the majority against your decsion is the consequence of being gothic.. etc. It's ok to be Gothic.. but are you willing to put up with the majority of the world thinking it is rediculous as the result.. so you decide if it is ok or not.... Let me ask you this? Would it be ok if we decided to paint the nation's White House to a color of Fuchsia Pink?
Back to subject.. when you go Gothic or Punk Rocker.. you go into your own world.. You hang out with others of the same.. you get seperated from normal people.. if you don't like the seperation.. or are not happy with just being around people like yourself.. then why go Gothic or Punk Rock? Apparently you want both worlds and are undecided as of what you want. If you wanted to be Gothic, then why would the normal people even concern you? Normal people are not going to hang out with a crackhead bum on the street corner.. the same as someone with hoops and holes in their nose, devils tatooed on their eyelids, etc.. Not to mention religious differences.. this type of question could go on forever.
This is not directed at you.. this is directed at anyone in the Gothic or Punk Rock situation asking this same question. A true gothic person would not wonder this type of question. They'd be happy with themselves, and not worry about what the other people think. That or the person may be getting yelled at by their parents. I assume the writer is a younger person living with mom and dad, and getting yelled at.. Doesn't want to listen to their parents, and is disrespectfully making their parents look silly. Needs to learn respect for the parents and save it for when they move out. They are bringing this stereotype upon the parents with family, work, and friends, and not just the child himself.

Speaking in great generalizations, goth or punk rockers tend to be more outspoken than others. Some people feel threatened or intimidated by this upfront vocalization of feelings. As such. they condemn goths/punk rockers as bad people and irresponsible, arrogant individuals.

there is nothing wrong with dressing up goth if you are white. if you are white you shouldn't dress east indian as that is disrespectful to those who had to deal with whites invading India and trying to steal their religious culture and using their swastika for wrong purposes 69 years ago which aint that long ago.

this society doesn't like anything out of the ordinary, you can dress up anyway you want to....screw the rest of the world...if you enjoy that lifestyle go for it.....i sometimes wear my "biker" vest out sometimes just to get peoples reaction,i have some questionable things in it,i think it's funny...i get alot of questions about the pentagrams and some other Egyption symbols on it....If people don't like me for who i am...then i don't need them....i am 44 y.o. and i love the gals with the goth look.....it's the black hair and clothes that turn me on......i have dated more gals with darker hair than i have blondes.Good luck.

Don't listen to negative people. Do your own thing. Just don't be surprised when people cross the street when they see you walking in their direction! Many people have a fear of people who stray from the so-called "norm". This should not effect your freedom to experiment with alternative lifestyles, if that is what you want to do in your own life.

First, who says it isn't? Second, if you really want to be one, why do you care? Rock, especially punk, is all about rebellion.
