That the whole world revolves around them...that they are the cat's meow....I mean let me you an example, my in-laws (SIL) bought a huge house in the middle of no-man's land, their MIL moved in and live in the basement, the niece's change boyfriends like they change underwear...spoiled and have every designer brand of every stitch of clothing, toy, gizmo, etc. and you EVER hear from them when you go there are the same old "stories" over and over and over and if you EVER get to get a word in they barely let you finish your sentence because they have to "one-up" whatever it is you're saying???
I mean are all rich people such unsufferable bores? TG it's once a year you have to put up with that crap. LOL :~)
And I mean we have a whole lot more going US than they supposedly think they have for them.
My kids think they're absolute morons and just have a good laugh about them on the way home. One of their kids is an aspiring MORTICIAN...and oh the stories we have to put up with!

Right on person...think is they are very jealous of US...make fun of us...because my kids are very intelligent and talented etc...they clean houses...their parents are millionaires and spend all their time in casinos...all they do is drink themselves silly the whole lot of them and we have to put up with the same unbearable stories of "glory" over and over...it's so sad it's pathetic. It's my hubby's brother...they married tat 16..their daughter has crashed 3 cars and the MIL keeps buying her BRAND new ones every time...nice lessons for your kids huh?

Thanks Lizard, I'm always nice...we just don't value the same thing. If I say I just bought myself this, she'll say my Client just gave me $500 and this one gave me this and that...you just can't say anything cause they have to out-do you on everything. So I kill them with niceness....it really drives them insane but it's such a chore...I just keep saying "
"I could use another glass of wine I think" and get my point across.

Thanks Azooga...you are so right...and there are always some children who are like that no matter how hard parents try...but those that truly know you don't fault you...as they DO know you're good people who try...I just hate those who would look at someone like your brother and then get all judgmental that it's because of you guys somehow...it's that unfairness that really bothers me. All in all, we are always fair and non judgmental with people...I hate that they bring out the worst me I suppose!

At least your kids can have a laugh, but make sure they don't become mean spirited over these visits. Try to encourage them to find a positive trait about your in-laws (it can be a difficult game)! If anything, this will be a good example for how your children should not act! Also, let your kids know why your relatives' behavior is not acceptable.

Well, not all rich people are like that. My family is wealthy, but if we misbehave in a way that is rude and makes other people think twice about ourselves, then we get things taken away from us. I was raised right. My brother is fourteen, and he has no sense of gift ettiquite. He started opening presents as soon as my grandparents got to the house, and he was done before anybody sat down to enjoy the holiday. When he looked for about three seconds at each gift he made a pile with almost all his gifts and said, "Take these back and give me te money." My parents were so embarrased they didn't even want to talk to them. I saw my parents later when my grandparents left and they were crying. I got many gifts, and I loved all of them, and I made sure everybody opened gifts by taking turns. My brother didn't even say thank you. I was embarrased myself. He is spoiled and he will pay for it later on when he can't take care of himself when he moves on.
All you have to do is set a good example for your kids and make sure that when you do visit your in-laws that you try and take the floor for once, and get to know them. If there is any hope of changing them, then maybe it will happen. I am sure you are not the only relatives of them that feel the same way as they do. So just enjoy the holiday with your family and don't get hung up in all the craziness.

Why do you go over there if you dislike them so much? Just do your own thing. I say kudos to them for taking in an aging parent. And there is nothing wrong with becoming a mortician. If their stories bother you, just politely ask them not to tell them.
Your kids deserve better problem-resolution skills than just to make fun of someone behind their back. Set an example. Or better yet, just avoid the people who you can't stand.

I don't; no one in my family is rich enough. But I think it's important to remember that they are people too, even if they don't seem like it sometimes : )
They are the way they are because of hurts that have happened to them in the past; try to find something you like about them and appreciate. Tell them, too, hard as it seems. They might be surprised and try to act nicer, if they think you're being cold to them.

The good thing is that you and the kids can have a laugh over it and realize that that behavior is ridiculous. I'm sure everyone has family like that, everyone I know seems to...

I think we all have relatives somewhere in the family we feel like this about.
As long as you find them entertaining then it's not too bad.

We all have that problem I think. With out people that make you feel this way, you would never appreciate your life. To each his own.
