I have a question that has always puzzled me. Why is it when you look at the stats from either college or the NBA the rebounds in the 50's and 60's so much higher for rebound average and single game high than they are now?

better shooters, to be honest less motivation, players then played because it was fun and they wanted to unlike alot of the guys who play for money now days. I also beleive that you werent allowed to dunk then or something like that, and also players were typically smaller even when the could, so a lot of rebounds now that turn into easy two hand slams back then turned into second and third rebounds.

I believe there were rules changes made to alter this. Same with points. I don't know a whole lot about it but I do know they changed several rules b/c of George Mikan who absolutely dominated the paint. Maybe it has to do with him. Also there weren't as many good players fighting for the rebounds so one person that was really good could probably pull down a pretty ridiculous amount.

The shooters are much more accurate than they were in the past so there are fewer rebounds. Further, since the players are taller they can dunk more and better.
