I think you are absolutely correct. I've had this discussion many times. Supporters of Democratic campaigns and causes are the most educated and wealthy in the U.S. A Republican brought this to my attention in his attempt to persuade me that Democrats were really "the party of the rich" and were nothing but intellectual elitists. All it did was reaffirm my opinion that these people are willing to pay more taxes for the betterment of society. And the fact that democratic voters have the highest percentage of graduate degrees and PHDs, shows me the brightest minds in our country support the party they see as bringing America forward. These highly educated multimillionares/billionares are pushing a party that will hurt their pocket books. That shows me they care more about the country than their change purses. Republicans often talk about welfare, while completely ignoring the corporate welfare that costs this country over $150 billion every year.
I also think something must be said of Republican attempts to legislate morality. Republicans see themselves as small government, yet the current party is a perversion of it's former self. They have created huge government programs, they have run up the debt to unbelieveable numbers, they have also taken the duty of morality police. They want the government involved in people's reproductive matters and people's sex life. Whether someone chooses to abort a fetus or marry their long time partner, are not things the government should be meddling in. Their religiosity only goes so far. When the elected head of the Christian Coalition wanted to make combatting poverty and protecting our environment key parts of their plan, he was rebuffed and forced to leave. If that doesn't say something, I'm not sure what does.

Sam run to the hills you're approximately to get a stompin'. massive adjustments between us and them eh? nicely on economics we, Democrats, sense government needs to play a larger function. We sense that the government needs to step in while it somewhat is all people is at a substantial possibility. Now some like myself do no longer agree government should be in each element, however while issues grow to be dire and the yankee citizen is jeopardy the government needs to take an energetic function in looking after the citizen. As for social rights the only one i'm going to award a reliable argument for is Anti-abortion. that's a appropriate and it somewhat is an extremely convincing argument. the different social liberty the republicans oppose is definitely "religious". however Democrats are lifeless incorrect while it includes weapons. people have a appropriate to very own, posses, and use firearms for entertainment, risk-free practices, and easily to have. exterior of that we are enormously lots the comparable social gathering. for a protracted time republicans and democrats the two alike change ideals while it includes distant places affairs. on occasion the republicans are for international family on occasion the Democrats. there is no longer an substantial difference there.

No bombing.
In my mind, Republicans cater to the well-to-do: corporations, folks with six-figure incomes, etc. That's who they court. That's where the bulk of their donations comes from.
In my mind, Democrats cater to the little guys...the not so well-to-do: Five figure incomes and lower, struggling mom and pop businesses, etc. That's where the bulk of their donations comes from.
The answer, my friend, is not blowin' in the wind. It's somewhere in the middle. Those corporations and big guys employ the little guys. Those little guys make it possible for the big guys to be big guys.
The answer is in some actual disciplined spending in DC. The pork needs to come out of the budget. Earmarks are a crock. The federal government is paying for things that don't benefit "we the people," or even a significant portion of them.
The answer is in a tax code that isn't of the lobbyists, by the lobbyists, and for the lobbyists. There is no reason for an Internal Revenue Code that, in printed form, would give a fit adult a hernia.
Every taxpayer (personal or corporate) should pay something. Deductions and credits should never entirely zero out a taxpayer's tax burden.
Short version: If we spent on the right stuff, higher taxes would be unnecessary.

Republicans respect the individuals, democrats are more for the society( this is why it sounds communist to me.)
Republicans used to want a small gov't. Liberals want a big government taking care of everyone, and everything(lack of individuality present).
Republicans want to fix problems. Liberals fight to fix symptoms. Liberals tend to create laws to fix something which creates more laws. Republicans might consider the removal of laws might be a solution.
Republicans laissez faire, liberals: everything controlled by government.
Republicans: more traditional, religious. Liberals: tolerant and open minded.
My view about the parties might not be correct.
I grew up in a communist country. Everybody was taught to suffer for the sake of next generation. Or suffer for the well being of the society. Well, there is no society. Society is the "symptom" of individuals. By taking care of individuals, you take care of the society. By categorizing people you create more problems. You create laws which offer Wellfare. This program creates another expense for the country. The program gets abused requiring even more funding for the control of abuse...so on.
Poverty is a symptom. It's not the problem. The problem is lack of opportunities.
Liberals are in general nicer than conservatives, but their approach is naive. There are some situations where you have to go to war, and do more than shoot a couple of Tomahawk missiles. Some "solutions" do not bring return instantaneously. That doesn't mean it's not the best solution. Usually 90% of "solutions" do not become profitable right away. Education is one of them. You have to sit down, study, pay for it....all money, time, resources that you are giving which do not bring any money right away. Welfare program brings gives money right away. Which one is solving problems?

Second Ammendment
Dems want everyone unarmed
Reps know that guns are not the problem.
Here's a bit of common sense for everyone...
> Firearms cause crime like flies cause garbage.
> Criminals prefer unarmed victims.
> Gun laws only take the guns from the good guys.
> A firearm is safest in the possesion of it's owner
> A guy kicks in your front door. The police response time is 30 minutes and YOUR response time is less than 30 seconds, who comes out alive?
> There is NO law in the world that PREVENTS the crime. Does the criminal say "Gee, I can't carry this weapon concealed so now I can't rob this bank."?

The Republicans have created the largest debt in history. If that isn't big government, I don't know what is. With all of the personal freedoms that Bush and his cohorts are willing to take away from US citizens, its hard for me to understand the rampant blind support of such irresponsible and inept management of our country. They have a lot of you right where they want you- scared & broke. And thats why they lost the Senate & House.

Democrats - willing to pay higher taxes to get a bigger hand out. Let big government take care of them.
Republicans - want individuals to do more for themselves and keep more of what they earn. Let people try to handle their lives themselves so government can be smaller.
Just my opinion. This comes from having a liberal democrat for a Mom and a conservative republican for a Dad, and many interesting conversations about this very topic over dinners.

so, how do you feel about Bush running up a debt (trillions) that your great-great-grandchildren will be paying off?
christoph wrote: "Republicans believe people should be able to do what they want"
really? I thought that the Republicans were the ones who wanted to STOP people from doing what they want to do...stop abortions, ban gay marriages, have schools lead prayers, etc. No?

The one big difference is the name. When I vote, I am choosing between 2 candidates who have already been selected for me. What are my real options in this "either/or" scenario? It's a little like someone asking me "Would you like to be poked in the right eye, or the left eye?" When it's all said and done, I still feel the same.
