I've got a 1999 Chevy Prizm (Toyota corolla, same thing) that gets 35 mpg and I drive at a high rate of speed all the time, that i also use in the city. It gets good gas mileage all the time, and runs OK with 201,000 miles. Keep the maintenance up on any vehicle and it will last a while for you. Trust me, I know.
With the aforementioned car, I also had a 1994 Chevy silverado with 300,000 miles on original motor and tranny and currently own a 2001 silverado with 225,000 miles on the original motor. Hope this helped. Good luck.

Check into the fuel mileage races held in England? or Europe? that are held annually to get an idea of the complexity involved with your question. I suspect that car capable of those parameters would include a hybrid drivetrain, slick aerodynamics and light weight. Safety issues shoud be a top concerne traveling at those speeds in car that meets these criteria. Light weight planes can be "totalled" by humming birds durring takeoff's and landings.

I don't think going 80 mph all day should have any influence on destroying the engine as long as you keep it full of oil and coolant in any car. I would wonder how you are going to carry enough fuel to go 1900 miles even at 30 mpg?

I know the new hybrid cars will run 80 and get about 40mpg but it takes them a week to reach those speeds

I agree with the motorcycle idea. They don't make a car that gets good gas milage at high speeds.
