Its hard to tell in some cases, but for example, they'll be nicer to you. You'll need to give them their favorite foods in order to befriend them. If they do like you they'll stop by your house and a cutscene will occur and the game will progress.

If they say hello to you on the streets, if they smile at you, and make small talk. Why do you care? who cares what other people think of you. There is too many fake people out there anyways.
