music project...ugg, forgot my book in school

An open string is one that isn't fretted, but still played. Like if you needed to play an "E" chord the low E, G and hi E are open strings. They do not need to be altered to play the chord.

wouldn't a open string mean a open chord where you have no fingers on any of the strings
