we never had that option when I was in school, we had to do it ourselves or ask mom and dad. I think it makes kids not use their own brains. what do you think?

I wondered the same thing. But if they simply pick any answer they are likely to get it wrong (not every posting is right). If they get the right answer and quote it exactly, a decent teacher might spot it as not their own work (a good teacher will pick up on individual style and word usage).

The way I look at it, if they get several correct answers, they have to read through each one and decide which is most correct. One or more of the postings may help the student understand a concept that the text or their teacher couldn't get through to them.
Here's hoping anyway.

Peace

there are several websites that help kids with their homework. No, this was not an option when I was in school, but with more and more two working parent families and more and more single parent families, it is great to have a place where kids can go for homework help. As far as this site goes, I would not recommend it, but the responsibility lies with the answerer also. Some don't care and will just give the answer away- if I see someone looking for help, I will help them understand how to do the problem or point them in the right direction for research on their own- unfortunately some are just looking for their 2 pts or just dont think of what they are doing when they give the answers away.
Personally, though, I prefer kids to use a website specifically geared to homework help- it is a lot safer than YA and will be more beneficial to their education.

No. I'm in favor of it as long as the adults on here who offer help do it as they would if they were their own children. Just make suggestions. Give guidance. Get them thinking. Sometimes the interactive feedback is just what the students need. You have to realize that if they know how to use a search engine, they can look up the answer to almost anything any how. The internet didn't exist when we were in school, but there were huge sets of encyclopedia. Things have just gotten easier to access. I think the human interaction factor is good. (Many of these kids don't have parents handy to ask -- some are latch key or have parents who did not do well in school. Just like anything in the world -- this can be used, or abused.

I am a High School teacher and I think it is great.
As long as they learn then this a resource and that is wonderful. They are using their brains - it is ok to learn from others - education strategies now include a great deal of group work. They learn from one another and hear things that they, or the teacher, may never have thought of. It is very effective. There are many students today who do nothing - and many of them may feel comfortable here and that is a big step in the right direction.
My concern sometimes is the accuracy of the information... but they can learn to be responsible for that.

I think I hear sour grapes in the question and in other answers.

I thoroughly agree and I won't answer ... very, very occasionally I might point someone to references or ask some pertinent questions.

I don't think that the people who do this realise the harm that they're doing themselves. It's perfectly possible that the teacher will ask them to explain their reasoning and then the wheels will fall off the wagon. And as for the questions that come from tertiary level students - apart from the fact that they couldn't be answered within the space available - the harm they're doing themselves by not working out the answers themselves frightens me when I think that they could finish up working as a doctor or an economist or business manager ...

Have you noticed how rarely they say Please?

I know it's not possible because there would be a workaround but in my dreams Yahoo would prevent these questions being asked.

Yea its great!
lots of kids can answer their homework them selves but it takes a lot of research and time which is a bust for most of us but this ways we can have ideas to get started or to continue projects/home works...etc that way we still get educated by doing it and still avoid the time consuming thoughts just to get started, this is great!

This is why if you do respond to such questions, don't give them the answer but I think it is good to give them hints, tips, suggestions or resources which will make their finding the answer easier.
