I ran into this free computer the other day. It's an old Sony Vaio with 4 GB HD, 32 MB RAM, and a pentium II proc. This is currently the only computer I have and I am looking to upgrade.

Would it be worth it to by an external hard drive and 1 GB memory for it and upgrade to XP? I will mostly be using it for Photoshop/Illustrator, surfing the net, music/ipod, burning CDs/DVDs.

And how hard is it to upgrade memory on a computer like this. Possible costs?

I appreciate any and all comments/suggestions. Thank you!!

IMO , its not even worth trying to upgrade it. ( Its just to old and wont handle the latest hardware )

The system probably wont even handle 1gb of memory .. maybe max of 512?

Your best off just buying a new machine all together.

DELL do good machines for next to nothing nowadays.

It would not be worth putting anything into this machine. It is too old and too slow. You would be much better off simply buying a newer, but not top of the line machine. Even a simple starter machine like Dell sells or something like that would be better because you would have a newer faster machine for less than you would dump into that old one.

My first response when I read this was that I though you were kidding. That is how bad of an idea this is. I use Photoshop almost every day, and it is a real resource hog. Your computer here would have tons of trouble.

Hope this helps.

Programmes like Photoshop/Illustrator are major resource hogs. By the time you attempt to upgrade RAM and purchase an external hard drive, and upgrade to XP, you are going to be spending close to the same amount of money it would cost for a new machine.

So, treat yourself to a new computer and donate the old one to a museum.

thanks i needed a good laugh, you really considered using that system to edit and ilustrate; burning medai files.

Seriously UPGRADE an AMD dual core CPU, at the very least 1 GB ram and for your needs Not less than 100GB Hard drive.
and XP pro would probably be a better idea than xp home.
With a multiformat DVD-burner.

Dell are good on price but lousy on system performance and stability (speaking from what i've heard from corporate users).
www.dabs.com do a great range of systems and components.

for your needs something akin to the acer model listed below from the dabs.com ebsite would be close to perfect for your needs.

the next one down in spec'n to suit your needs would be quicklinx: 4B80WS
mfr#: LX.AG20J.051 at £643.99
www.dabs.com for details to be taken direct to the products enter the quicklinx codes and press enter

memory doesnt cost alot, maybe about £40. You might be pushing XP tho, 'cause a pentium 2 isnt alot. I would need to know how fast the processor is. I dont think it is powerful enough to run PhotoShop, or even iTunes.

ought to you grant some examples of those malfunctions? I mean, carry out a little keys in simple terms give up working, or do the keys stick, or does the finished keyboard give up responding in any respect? the main regularly occurring factor i've got considered is that persons inadvertently activate keypad emulation, wherein a piece of the keyboard behaves like a numeric keypad for a quick time. So case in point instead of typing "u" it ought to variety "4", and "i" is replaced with "5", etc.

Probably a waste of time 'cause it probably won't work out. Not only is the machine just old and out of resources, but anything new you put into the machine will be incompatible.

Nope, new PC's are so cheap these days its a waste to throw money at that old beast. I would have it put to sleep and purchase a brand spanking new one and treat yourself. Hell its the season of giving but also RECEIVING!!!
