If it's cat urine, it's bad news. I tried all kinds of products to clean our carpet, but nothing worked for long. We had to rip up the carpet. The plywood beneath was stained and is what was holding the odor. We cleaned it and painted it with KILZ and that took care of the smell. We had to replace baseboards though because we have them stained and the KILZ is a opaque white primer paint. We finished by putting a new carpet in and the smell has been completely gone now and it's been almost a year. A lot of work though and a big expense replacing the flooring.

If your wood floor was sealed or if liquid can't penetrate it, you may only have to KILZ your subfloor and clean your top floor.

Good luck!

If the animal smells you are referring to is urine..Then you will have to pull up all the flooring. The urine will seep down under the flooring and stay there for eternity. And if your animals continue to urinate on the floors..it will never get better only worse. If the smell is there due to some one Else's animal before you moved in. you will have to pull up the flooring and start over. There is no quick fix for this.

i have a friend who is a vet. they use vinegar and water and a small amount of bleach to get rid of urine smell. but you may want to leave out the bleach if your putting it on wood floors. hope that helps.
