The wives tales about the umbilical cord does not even make any sense. Think about what muscles your using when you reach over your head. How could that possibly tie an umbillical cord?

That's for heart condition. If you have a heart condition, you shouldn't reach over your head. If you're pregnant, you shouldn't do heavy lifting, take unnecessary risks, or do guy kinds of exercise, and someone else has to empty the cat litter box because of the parasite that you could pick up there is devastating to your fetus. Also, no drinking alcohol. Abstain now for the sake of the baby's whole life. Every healthy thing you eat and do now is returned 100 times over in your child's life. Read about it. Ask more questions. Parenting the most significant and rewarding thing you'll ever do, and it starts now. Have fun!

The whole umbilical cord around the neck story is an old wives tale. Just be careful about how heavy things are when you pick them up, especially over your head. It has more to do with using your stomach muscles and over straining them, than anything else. That's why you should treat yourself a little more delicately when you're pregnant. Take advantage of it, let other people do things for you if you can get away with it!! LOL!!

No. This is a silly myth. If women couldn't reach over their head while pregnant, then there wouldn't be many babies who survive to term! Think about those women who tote water for their village over their head every single day.

You shoudn't lift anything really really heavy in general, but reaching over your head is fine.

I believe it isn't advisable if there is weight involved in this lifting, say a heavy item being put in the loft or as part of a strenuous fitness programme, vs less harmful raising of arms to hang up some laundry. It is a good excuse to delegate the heavy stuff!

You should consult your baby doctor...they would know the facts! I have reached over my head during pregnancy and my children are fine but seek professional advice with these concerns!

Yes. This may cause the umbilical cord to wrap around the child's neck, cutting off the oxygen supply to the fetus.
