During the Cold war, when so many people were all agog about the threat of International Communism, a large part of the Right spent most of their energies fighting Liberals at home, rather than Communists abroad. The hysteria got so bad that people were falsely accused of being pro-Communist.
Today, with the Cold war well in the past, Rightists are perversely delighted to have another threat to be in a dither about: International Jihadism. And once again, they spend most of their time sniping at Liberals here and doing nothing about terrorists there. Once again, Liberals are being accused of being pro-Islamic radicalism and of being Un-American.
Nothing ever changes. The fetid swamp of the Right keeps producing the same aberrant characters.
If you on the Right really want to combat terrorism, first stop dividing America. Stop making false equations between Liberalism and Islamic Radicalism. Fact is, YOU are more like them! Liberalism is the alternative to Islamism.

Leogirl: You'd better defend your allegation that Liberalism embraces Islamism. Islam is an intensely conservative religion. It has a hard time grasping the notion that religion and government should be separate-- just like American Rightists. Both Islamists and Rightists are bothered by expression of sexuality in the culture. Both hate and oppose Liberalism.

If you go back to the beginning of the last century (1900), you'll find that there has never been a period in which Republicans have not focused there hatred on one group or another. Whether it's labor activists, suffragettes, immigrants. anti-war activists, child molesters, drug users, blacks, browns, jews, etc., etc.,

This is what Republicans do to get votes. If Repubs told the truth about what they stand for (making the rich richer at any cost) they would be a perrenial minority party. Republicans generally possess all the negaitve personality traits a person can have. They then make one feel good about having them, and suck the target into voting for them.

It can only be expected that Repubs are attacking those who aren't in lockstep with Boy George. This is what they do.

No, because during the cold war there was a significant number of liberals that were talking about appeasing communists, something the majority of Americans(including the majority of liberals) learned not to do with fascists during World War 2. Since the late-1960's the number of liberals who advocated appeasing communists grew dramatically. Today, they advocate appeasing ANY enemy of America, including Radical Islam. People like Ward Churchill, Noam Chomsky, and the late Susan Sontag freqeuently insists(ed) that the 9/11 attacks, and other acts of terrorism are justified retaliation against America, which is what makes Conservatives view liberals as pro-Islamic radicalism. This is made worse by their opposition to stopping other nations that sponsor terrorism(like Iraq used to do). Liberalism many be an alternative to radical Islam, but it's more blind to the threat than conservatives are.

Yes, there WERE liberals who advocated appeasement during the Cold War. Henry Wallace, the so-called "Progessive" candidate who ran for President in 1948, George McGovern since 1968, and Robert and Ted Kennedy were four notable examples.

Excellent point. The right wing survives on sudo-fascist energy. The way, and this administration is the PERFECT example, this element of the political spectrum acquire, and maintain, power is through focusing peoples energy on an enemy, be it real or perceived....mostly perceived. This only works for so long, so they constantly shift emphasis on who the enemy is or a different facet of the enemy. If they keep their supporters attention focus on something other than themselves, they stay in power longer. The same techniques were used by the Nazis. No, I'm not calling this administration Nazis so don't start flipping out over that.
