This is the predicament I am in right now. Last week I sent a check to my university's bursar's office to pay my tuition. However, the check has been returned, for there was less money in my checking account than I needed. At the time I sent the check, I thought money was to be transferred from my savings account to the university's account. As an immigrant, I did not know what I was supposed to know. Anyway, I can't ask the bursar's office to redeposit the check right now because the office will be closed till Jan 2nd. I am out of country, so I can't send another check. The deadline is the 1st of January. I called the bank, and they said they cannot help me out until the 2nd of January. I wonder if there is a way I can appeal to the university for grace. If there is one, please let me know. Thank you.

I can't speak to the university specifically, but show up, explain, and ask. if they stone wall you, ask to speak with the Dean or University president - they have to talk to you but don't want to deal with these things, plus it was an honest mistake, so they will almost assuredly let it slide (believe me - Deans and presidents have let much much worse slide with a personal visit). Hit your sponsor/advisor 1st, then the Dean, then the president so that if 1 rejects you can move up.

However, you shpould be able to send another check. If you have a check from you current bank, you can get software to print checks (searh the "Freeware" sites on the I-net) - all you need is the routing info off of an old check and the address to send it to - it may be printed and sent from overseas, but if the money is in the bank and it has the right routing info, it will be good.

Be realistic - it is just 1 day late - nobody is gonna sweat a day. They want your money as much as you want to attend. Settle down. Enjoy your break. This is no biggie.
