The saying is "I must be cruel, only to be kind: Thus bad begins, and worse remains behind." It's from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

It means that sometimes it is necessary to cause a little harm in order to prevent a greater harm. That the choice in an action to take isn't always between good and bad, but between bad and worse.

Yes, I agree with what Shakespeare wrote, but not with how you have it rephrased.

Yes and no.

Yes - for example when you are dealing with your children - if you don't teach them right from wrong - who will? Sometimes you have to take the "harsh" approach for someone to learn a lesson.

No - because (in certain situations) true kindness is all you need. And there is no need to be rude/cruel unless you absolutely have to be.

Sometimes yes but it has to be thought out thoroughly - is it worth it or not. Otherwise it would be just being cruel.

it depends on the situation, actually. sometimes you've just got to do something seemingly-nasty just to protect the other person's well-being (although most of the time, the other person doesn't realize it right away).

Depends on the context. Often times, people might view you as cruel for what you do...when really it is for their own good.
haha ie: children. point proven. :)

No, but you should know what amounts to cruelty and compassionate enough to understand why it can hurt somebody, so that you can be kind to avoid it.

Sometimes you have to answer the hard questions and tell people that they are wrong.
