Thank you SO much for the additional hint. I spent an hour or more researching this earlier and could not find it. But with the new hint, the answer would be Milburn Stone who played Doc Adams on Gunsmoke. However, my research led to this information also: " ...the reason Mil did not accept the Naval Academy appointment had to do with the medical requirements of the academy of the time. As a young teen, Mil had broken his arm playing football. The arm was not set perfectly, though it was in no way a handicap or disfigurement. Naval Academy regulations made it necessary for Mil to have the arm rebroken and reset. He resisted this and, of course, he also had the opportunity to become a professional actor right out of high school..."
