Well desired?
That is a personal preferance. But I suspect, most people who are competing in sporting events do want the recognition. If they didn't then woulden't the just run 26 miles for self-fulfillment - they woudn't enter a race to run 26 miles in front of other people.

The praise and adulation is the reward for hard work, dedication, self control, perseverance, physical fitness.

It is tradition dating back thousands and thousands of years.
It gives a group of people something to unite them. Routing for a team or athlete is a community building thing. It gives a sense of community to schools (varsity sports), cities (professional teams), and countries (the olympics).
