He could just want out, or he could want fresh water/food... but more likely than anything he is trying to tell you to clean his cage!! So, once you have taken him out, replinished his food/water and changed his bedding if he keeps it up I'd say that his cage is too small for him, or that he is in need of a more regular day/night cycle and needs to be moved.

I know for a fact that hamsters will chew on the bars of their cage simply to try and escape. You don't have to worry, unless you notice the bars crumbling and bending. If that happens, get another cage with stronger bars.

Also make sure that the bars are not too widely spaced apart - the hamster might escape! This will both be a hassle for you, as well as motivate the hamster to continue trying to escape it's cage.

Hamster's teeth grow, and if there is nothing else in his cage that he can chew on then he'll chew on the bars. Mine did that too, and he had tons of stuff to chew on. He may just like to chew on the bars.

My hamster does that all the time whenever he wants to get anyones attention. I think it also helps wear his teeth down.

It is probably trying to wear down its teeth or telling you it wants a toy or something to play with
