Well, we have nipples because first of all we are mammals, but these, however have a 'real' function only in females. i think that men have nipples because their presence is determined by a gene that is not found on the sex chromosomes, even of they may be found there, it is not a sex-linked characteristic; so that any human(or mammal) will have them, independent of his sex .Evidence is that when you compare the nipples of a baby girl with that of a man, there is strictly no anatomical difference, whatsoever. The difference is made at puberty when the hormones, which in contrast are sex-linked, come into play, and in the female, lead to the development of mammary glands.

They are created in both male & female fetuses. As the
sexes differentiate, they are simply not activated in the male.
After birth they are simply vestigial organs.
There is no evolutionary benefit to having them nor is there an evolutionary benefit to removing them.
Evolution would not be brought into play in this case.

In the male, nipples are often not considered functional with regard to breastfeeding, although male lactation is possible In the male, nipples are often not considered functional with regard to breastfeeding, although male lactation is possible.
In human anatomy, the two nipples are located near the center of the breasts, surrounded by an area of sensitive, pigmented skin known as the areola. The pigments of the nipple and areola are brown eumelanin (a brown pigment) and to a greater extent pheomelanin (a red pigment). The nipple and areola of males and females can be erotic receptors, or considered sex organs. Stimulation or sexual arousal can cause the nipples to become erect, due to the release of the polypeptide neurotransmitter oxytocin

It would look funny if they didn't have nipples. There are lots of things that don't make sense. Like why do we have eye brows? What real purpose do we need them for???

I don't know, but DAMN! This is the best, most thought-provoking question I have ever seen on here!

So, an equally thought-provoking question would be:

Did Adam, the only man not born, have nipples?

Males and females have most of the same components during their stay in the womb and the final determination of the sex is late in the preganancy. Males and females have female and male hormones and general make-up until near birth where the sex is determined. The male nipples are remnants of and component of female sexual hormones. Just a guess.

It's not correct that humans is the only mamal species in which males have nibbles. In all mammals, males have lactation glands, although the visibility of the nibbles varies.

not really that they serve any purpose to a man...nor did they at any time....we as very young fetuses are all female...or rather gender neutral...with nipples...and then proceed to become one or the other...the nipples are there before our dna decides
