i just got my first job at this breakfast/cafe as a dishwasher. ive only beem working there for a week now and dont have any official work hours. the manager told me when my first day of work was and also my second. i had my first day with no problems but the second day the manger wasnt there and it turned out he told me the wrong time si i was 1hour late. then today i get a call from someone who works there (not the manager) telling me i have a have today and was supposed to be in 30 minutes ago. im 4 hours away at my grandma because we went up there for christmas so theres no possible way i can get to work today.

what im trying to say is that ive only worked there for a week and have already been late once and missed a day of work. i have no official hours and only go in when the manager tells me (seems a dishwasher isnt his top priority). on top of this i am going to florida with my family in three days. so ive been late missed a day and now cant go in for a week.

There is nothing wrong with you asking for a work schedule. Most businesses post it anyway somewhere on the premises. It sounds like they aren't really respecting you--you might "just be a dishwasher" but you serve an important function and deserve the same respect they give the rest of the staff. That is no way for them to run a business.

Maybe they just didn't think of it with the holiday rush, but next time you go in, ask the manager for a written schedule because you want to be on time and a good employee but that is difficult if you don't know your hours.

Good luck!

Why did you start a job expecting to get a week off two weeks later and not get a schedule in advance of starting. You cannot be professional without a schedule. (yes, there are pro dishwashers and they make good money, very talented blokes that do twice what most can, hence the pay) I think you will not have this job much longer, but that is probably best in this case. Good luck.

I would call the restaurant right away and tell them that you haven't gotten any clear schedule and are confused. tell them that you want to work there, but you need a clearer schedule (you should also be clear about the time you need off). Now the ball is in their court. Good dishwashers are hard to find, so give them the impression you're a good one, and they'll give you a chance.

If you think its too late for that, its no big deal if you decide not to try and keep that job. they're used to it.

Honestly, it sounds like your manager is not a very good boss, and you should probably start looking for a new job. You don't want to work somewhere that is so disorganized that they can't even make a proper schedule. I know it's your first job, but it's better to leave now and find something else than to continue to let this manager's lack of professionalism make you look bad.

You need to talk with the manager and ask for a written schedule of your hours. Otherwise, this will continue to happen to you, and not look good on your record if you keep 'missing' work because you didn't know you were scheduled. Best of luck to you.

Chances are your hours are posted somewhere, and whoever trained you forgot to show you where to look. I would call the manager and explain what has happeed and tell him or her that you really do want this job and that you regret the confusion...then HOPE the manager really needs you, and chances are that they do and that you still have a job. Good Luck!

Well, what you do is, talk to the manager, tell him you need to know when your hours are. Hopefully you told him about your trip to Florida previously, or you will be looking for a new job when you get back.

Humm... Maybe you shouldn't have taken a job you couldn't commit to so close to the holidays. Now that you have it, I suggest that you get in touch with your manager and let him know what is going on asap! At least if you still want any chance of having that job when you get back.

tell him you quit. they shouldn't jerk you around like that anyway. they have to give you a schedule. this way, you will show up on time for them since you have an idea about when you have to go in. its your first job (not a great one) its not a big deal. life goes on.

it did for the rest of us!!
