well if you want to reload the operating system on your laptop from scratch this is what you do:

1) Get a bootable disk loaded with the OS

2) Insert the disc in your drive

3) Make sure that in your bios you have set to boot from your cd-drive before your hard disk

4) your computer will now boot from your cd and just follow the instructions. For windows, at this point it will ask you if you want to format your hard disk and erase every thing.

First off, in hp/dell talk it's a restore. if you want to reboot, that's a whole other story, and much more simpler. Try F8 or F11 when the puter is booting up, for those of you who don't know, you don't necessarily need media for restoring, the restore system creates a restore partition that has all it needs there to perform a restore. If no message appears when your Pc is booting up, look for your manual to check out which key it was (Yes, you should've saved it, along with your restore medias). Otherwise get your Dell restore medias and boot from the Cd/Dvd to perform a restore.

Cheers

to erase everything and start from scratch you need a recover disk. simply insert it in the drive and follow the prompts. your system should have come with one or you should have made one yourself.
