The biggest thing that will determine if he survives this (in the short run) is the severity of the head injuries and his internal injuries. If he has massive bleeding in the brain his odds are slim to none. If his internal injuries are so severe he had to have his heart repaired he's very critical. But there's lots of variables you didn't tell us so it's hard to say what his chances are. The fact that he's probably paralized from the neck down isn't good either. If he survives the other things his life expectancy will decrease dramatically because of complications of quadraplegia.

Any single injury you described could have killed him. So, that he is still hanging in there is miraculous. From the broken neck I would think he probably won't be able to walk - think the actor Christopher Reeve. But from the severe head injuries - that is so very serious, he could be very much altered if he does regain consciousness and may lose a lot of his brain and speech function and memory. I think you understand it is very bad. That he is still alive brings hope that there may be some recovery - so keep hoping and praying. At 19, all kinds of miracles happen, and this sounds like it falls into the miracle needed category. My deepest wishes for him go with this message.

well, by definition, a fatal accident means fatal, so there is no chance of survival. As for your colleague, it depends on him, they told my brother he would never walk again, and he is probably in better shape than the doctor who told him that. Then again, he may be a vegetable, you would probably do better with the opinion of the medical doctors familiar with the case than some git on here, pray if you believe in a god it couldnt hurt.

i dont think there is really any way to know at this point,,,,,,, some people make amazing recoveries from serious injuries like this,,,,, i think a major factor will be in exactly what type of head injuries he has,,,,,, the brain and the spinal cord are two areas where recovery is extremely difficult,,,, at the same time, you can have serious head injuries that dont totally destroy the brain,,,,,, it is expected for him to be unconscious for a while, i would think,,,,,, you will just have to give it time,,,,, and i mean weeks and months, before you even have an initial idea of his final condition,,,, best of luck to you all!

Depending on the head injuries there may be brain damage. Also, he may become quadripelegic due to the spinal injuries, especially seeing as where you have described the injuries to be located on the spine. His heart and other internal organs may have suffered permanent damage.

It really depends on how good the hospital is sometimes poeple heal completly, they may keep him in a medical coma so he can heal with out anymore pain. Things are amazing nowadays, also have you and your friends say a long hard prayer for him. I'm sad for you, it's really scary when a friend is hurt but be positive and all the best to him and you.

It sounds like the best your friend can hope for is life as a quadraplegic--can't use arms or legs. With the coma, he may have diminished brain function. He'll need all the friends he can get to help him adjust to a life with few prospects.

It is difficult - but what price do we put on life? My brother ended up loosing his business it took him 10 years to build to keep his mother in a vegetated state for ten years. Devastating to the whole family. She did not remember a minute of it. So you must ask yourself - are we keeping him from the after life for our selfish needs or Gods.

Well, the header for this question says "Fatal Accident: Survival Chances". If the accident is fatal, that means he was killed.

As for the rest, maybe you should ask his doctor, and not a bunch of idiots on yahoo?
