Hit the harmonic at the 12th fret on the low D string. This harmonic is an octave above the actual note so it should register as a regular "D" on the tuner.

tune by ear to an octave below the D on the 3rd string.

Alternatively tune it by holding the string down at the second fret, making an E. Your tuner will indicate when this is an E, so the open string will be a D.

(I thought 440 was middle C?)

440 is A. Set your tuner to 440. Tune first string to D, the second string to A, the third to D, the fourth to F#, the fifth to A, and the sixth to D. This is standard open D tuning. There is what is known as model tuning, this is good for playing slide guitar. Tune all strings as above except the fourth string, instead of tuning it to F#, tune it to G.

the tuner should be able to pick up "D" in any octave...try tuning all the strings in "E" tuning....then drop the low "E" to "D" by hitting the 5th fret on your "A" string...and then hook up the tuner...it should pick up on the "D" and you should be able to go from there...if not...you have a sh*tty tuner and need a new one
