My daughter and I both have laptops with wireless capability. I have downloaded the internet service providers software but it appears that our laptops need to be connected to the Actiontec by either a USB or Ethernet cable to be able to use the internet. What if we want to use it in a different room? What about at school, or in the library?

The "Actiontec" mentioned in this question is the Wireless router the sales people at the store said I should get. It is up and running, but the laptops will not have internet access unless they are connected to it using the ethernet cable. (Computers are not my thing so thank you to all who are trying to answer the question!)

You need to get a WIRELESS ROUTER, or you need to be in a Wi-Fi area to receive internet capability. Wifi areas are like Borders, Starbucks, Airports, and normally there is a fee, and not very secure. So do not put your personal info out there in places like that.
The only other way is to have a Internet card from a Mobile Provider, and you can access your Internet anywhere anytime, but it will cost you. Price varies depending on wireless carrier.

But no you can not just hook to an internet from your home, unless you have a wireless access point setup in your house.

YOU NEED A WIRELESS ROUTER!

You can't just "magically" connect a Wireless computer to the internet or network without a Wireless router.

Yes usually, but be sure to ask the sales person if there is an Ethernet Port on that specific model. But anyways yeah on almost every wireless laptop there is also a wired plug. And it will judge automatically, no need to change any options when you're home or at work.

I think you need a router. ONce your router is set up to connect to the internet, you can access the internet wirelessly thru the router.

Linksys is a good one. Good Luck

you need a wireless capable router to plug in to your modem. you could try doing away with your old device and getting a modem, router and wirless accesspoint in one device such as the Belkin F5D7632-4 ADSL Modem with Wierless G Router ok this device is only a 54Mbps wireless and there are faster.
see stores such as www.dabs.com for details
