I am thinking of getting the IUD "Mirena" but I've heard mixed things about IUDs. Can anyone give me any advice regarding this method of birth control?

I currently have the Mirena IUD; however I know of only short term effects since I had it in for only 5 months. I have not birth children; therefore, the insertion was really really painful and the first month was painful because it took awhile for my body to get use to the hormones and the IUD itself. They 1st have to measure your uterus so that when they insert it they don't puncture your uterus (side effect), and then they insert the IUD. It was incredibly painful (to a point where they almost had to stop insertion itself and I had to convience them that I will be able to withstand the pain). They stated that women that experience pain like myself cannot go through with the insertin because it's painful and find other methods of brith control to go on.

I don't know if you have birth children or not but for women who have it's stated that the IUD insertion is less painful and the woman has less of a chance of the IUD expelling out the object because there was baby growing in her uterus before. (I don't know if this is true but this is what the doctor told me).

I have not had the IUD expelled out during the initial 3 month period (they told me during this period that if the body expells the IUD then there is a chance that your body won't adjust to having the IUD). However the 1st month was painful I was having irregular spotting and light bleeding and it felt like I was having horrible cramps.

Since I'm a young adult they wanted to make sure I was in a stable long-term relationship and told me that if I was to break up with my boyfriend that I have to use condoms (not necessarily take it out) until I get back into a long-term stable relationship.

There's also a chance of infection in the uterus from any bacteria or STD (they had me take STD test) climbing up the string into your uterus.

But now 5 months I have light periods and hardly any cramps (if I do they're light). I don't have to remember to take a pill, to replace a ring, or to get a shot. I got a card that I carry around with me so that when I go to the doctors they know that I have had and when it's expected to come out (2011).

From my boyfriend's point of view he loves it and feel comfortable with it. I don't feel it when having sex nor does he. He doesn't have to worry about me getting pregnant as much (there's still that .01%), nor worry about me taking the pill everyday or the ring or the shot.

Good Luck.

had mine 7 years now... love it! sad day when i have to have it out....there are 2 types now.... as far as feeling it remember the string that hangs down softens aftera while... and it can be cut back too... a friend had her doctor do that beacuse her partner kept feeling poked... I never had any problems with my partners feeling it....BUT it is only recommened if you have a stable partner... i happend to get divorced after mine was placed and refused to have it removed against medical advice... my OBGYN was not happy. i did have a mucuous discharge for several months.. not enought to interfer with sex but enough to wear a light pad for awhile... but no... its great.. no thought except an occasional check for a string... oh and i know one gal got pregant in the first year after having one....baby aws ok they removed it right away... its about the most effective thing you can have... but not 100% only abstinence is 100% effective.
the insertions is not bad.. a little pinch then done... but i didnt have a period then so i had to be dilated.. usually you go in on your period...so the cervix is relaxed.
my best friends mom has the old copper one... has had it 20 years... she is fine...
talk to your doc.... read up! good luck...

The only trouble I had with my iud was breakthrough bleeding a.k.a spotting. If you can deal with that, I guess it's okay. I would usually spot for 3-4 days after my period. I eventually had it removed because of this.

As long as your Boy friend/ Husband/ significant other can't feel it, like I did and, made it very uncomfortable. It hurt me to have sex, as far back as it was possible to put it.
