Go to the gounds around an old deserted house. Even just the foundation will reveal where an old house used to stand and walking around the grounds there will often reveal some old lost items of the family(ies) that used to live there.

You can usually do pretty well at beaches, if you are close to the ocean. OR, if you are in farm country, most famrs have a place where they used to put their metal "junk" and then bury it. They dont do that anymore much, but they used to, and there is usually a lot of interesting stuff in those old "buried junkpiles." And the farmer will usually let you take a look, if you dont destroy anything.

If your city's parks have softball diamonds with bleachers or stands, I would look under and around them.

If there is any area where a carnival or fair sets up when the come to town, I would also look there.

It might be to look around playgrounds and schools as kids have a tendency to lose things.

School grounds, fair grounds, parks, and anywhere else kids frequent. Be sure to ask if it is okay first, many places prohibit this.
