deppression without having to be on medication? How can you not feel so isolated?

There are some types of depression (i.e. clinical depression) that are impossible to just "snap out of." You will need medication for this type of depression. But if you just have the blues, I'd say get out and do things. Go for a walk, take a trip somewhere, just keep yourself occupied and you won't have time to feel sad. Everyone feels down now and then, but if you have recurring depression or always feel depressed, you should probably seek out a doctor's help.

Good luck and feel better soon!

There are times when the only solution is medication.
There is nothing wrong with this as depression is caused, sometimes, by a chemical imbalance.
For myself I finally set down and analyzed my life to find out what it was that was depressing me and pulling me down.
I found that I felt I had no purpose or meaning in my life.
I wasn't doing that one thing that my inner being wanted to do.
I have started writing, become more active on Y/A, yes it therapeutic for me, and helping others.
Now I don't have so much free time.
You know what they say idle hands are the devils workshop.

Depression.
A genetic predisposition to depression should be considered.
On TV I saw a panel of Psychiatrists from different universities
and they all agreed that if about two months of talk therapy
does not do it then a person should be on meds with therapy.
My psychiatrist said I needed meds for life.
For sure depression alters mindset. Like alcoholism there
is often resistance to change from a part of the mind that may
be more biological than mental.
Some things that help (if you can muster the energy to do them)
Shower
Meditation
Diet
Exercise
Shift ego states. (Stand at attention and say, "I am in charge!")
Talk so someone
A shoulder to cry on.
Prayer
Altruism
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rather than avoid depression it is better to try to find out if something is pulling you down.
Maybe there is something you want really badly. Try to find what it is and if you really need it.

If you don't need it then it is neurotic. (been there) Find out what you want from this object and grow into doing it for yourself or grow from being dependent to inter-dependent.

If it is something important then make small goals toward getting it.

I think hobbies and friends are the best way. I think it has to depend on each individual person though. But I've noticed that laughter is the best medicine for me, so when I feel down I try to talk to people that make me laugh or watch a funny movie and stuff like that.

I am also like you because I am one of the most isolated people in the world. I can easily become sad all the time but I don't let myself do it. I fight severe sadness by being around people but not talking to them. This helps me tremendously. Another couple of tricks of mine is to have an imaginary friend and to daydream of living in your own little fantasy world of roses and bright green trees and all the rest. To have an imaginary friend is optional.

Do you have kids? Spend more time with the kids... Spend more time with family. Spend more time with friends and with those who love you... Get together with all of them... They will make you feel better...
