I tend to think it's self interest, personal ambition.
By which I mean the philosophy that the only thing that matters is in bettering yourself, in making yourself happy, powerful, strong, whatever.
This is a natural tendency. It's in all nature, that need to survive. But it's when we let this quality become our all, let it take over everything, that is when integrity is threatened. That is when we will do anything, no matter what it is, no matter what the cost, to make our own pedestal just a notch higher.
