use a mr. clean magic eraser. they work really well on shoes and you don't need to use a lot of water at all.

Very meticulously with a tooth brush and white hand-towel. You must be careful not to wipe with the surface of the shoe with the soiled cloth. Be sure to use a mild soap, but not bleach! No harsh abrasive or you will turn your shoe a yellow-jaundice color. Your shoe strings you should soak in soapy hot water first, then hand wash and then hang dry. No washing in a machine. Happy Cleaning.

Use Windex. Water will only make them bubble.
