an AVI is normally divx or xvid. It can also be mpeg4. Depends what codec was used to create it. There is a program called G Spot that will tell you what video/audio standard the file uses

The essence is in the Algorithm. Just like the JPG uses the Huffman code, the AVI uses a different algorithm to interleave elements of the video.
You may be able to import other types of files, but this will change when the Different code is applied.

It's an AVI...UNLESS it was ripped from a DVD, then it is considered a DIVX Avi file.
