From what Ive read about Windows Vista (the new operating system) there seems to have been a lot of pre production testing done. This version is purported to be the most stable OS Microsoft has ever released. However, in reality, I never run out and buy something just becuase it is claimed to be teh latest and greatest. The current OS, WIndows XP, is a very good platform and many computers now come with free upgrades to Vista. Additionally, buying now may save you a lot of $$ as there are many after the holidays sales. I just bought a Compaq laptop from Costo.com for $749. The same laptop at Best Buy was a lot more expensive. It is AMD dual core, 160Gb hard Drive, 1Gb RAM and dedicated NVidia graphics with 512 MB RAM.

My suggestion is this. Shop around for teh system that suits your needs. FInd the best price and enjoy it. Dont worry about Vista

A couple security tips:
Dont use the defualt account when you first start the PC. Create a new account that has only basic user rights. The defualt is an administartor level account. Using the basic account goes a long way to keep ing your system free of spyware, viruses and information loss.

Laurie, you need to wait about 6 months before you buy the new computer. Here's why:

1. Buying now and upgrading may not be the best idea because of the resources Vista requires. I'd rather get the new OS with new architecture that supports that OS's special functions.

Good Luck

Yeah, Id wait for January when the prices drop! Remember when the Intel Mac came out? it lasted for about a month and the Intel Core Duo mac came out, for the same price the last one was!! that is what you can expect. Now that Vista is coming out, and hasn't yet (I wonder why... hmmm Compiz maybe? :D ) most people will want a laptop that's vista capable, meaning a gig of ram (aprox. 712 reserved for just the OS?!! YIKES!! no thanks, I'll stick with Xp for now) and a 3d graphics card. that means that the standard will be this, and the 256, 512 ram laptops/desktops are going to be not as demanded, so you can expect a price drop so they can get rid of them. hope this helps!! Cheers

You dont need to buy a new computer. You may need to upgrade it however. There may be a few bugs in the Operating System itself, but it will have nothing to do with your computer.
Take this quick test to see if your computer is compatible with Vista, and if its not, maybe then its time to upgrade :)

Most of the newer computers are "vista ready". So buying now or waiting isn't going to make a difference...most pcs that are around 2 years or less old can be upgraded to run Vista, and yes at first just like every other microsoft product out there, it will be buggy. Your current computer may even be "vista ready" you can check it at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/capable.mspx

Or check it by downloading from:

I would wait unless you need something right now.
Upgrades are a major hassle.

Get a new computer with the upgrade installed and you will save a lot of time and effort.
